About us.
Hutch
Ngāti Kahungunu
Hutch has been building since the age of 16, bringing over 27 years of hands-on experience across residential and commercial projects. Raised in Pōrangahau, Hawke’s Bay, he comes from a proud lineage of craftsmen, with his passion shaped by his whānau - particularly his father, a Ngāti Kere Kaumātua and Kaitiaki, and his grandfather, a local builder. That back story of where he came from and what has made him the builder he is today, is pretty special and has really shaped the values and direction for the business - values that are grounded in care, responsibility and drive for quality.
Those values of delivering quality work on time, combining craftsmanship with smart, efficient problem-solving. Clear communication, honesty and following through on promises are central to how he works.
He’s proud of the strong team and positive culture they’ve built - working hard, sharing a laugh and genuinely enjoying the mahi. “When the team loves what they do, the quality always shows”.
A self-described perfectionist, he focuses on smart, efficient solutions that meet deadlines without compromising results. “Whether it’s a small residential job or part of a larger commercial project, our duty of care and commitment to quality never changes. I really value that we work across both sectors. Commercial and residential each demand something different from us and that keeps us sharp. It pushes us to grow - not just as a business, but individually in our skills.
Commercial work is often about speed, precision and understanding how to slot seamlessly into a bigger programme of works. It requires discipline and coordination. Residential, on the other hand, is more personal. We still bring that same structure and attention to detail, but there are moments where we slow down - sitting with clients, talking things through, adapting as needed. It’s more hands-on in a different way. Being able to do both makes us more adaptable. It also means our clients get the best of both worlds”
“And I like to think all our clients genuinely enjoy being part of the process and working alongside us. For us, it’s never just a transaction. The relationship matters. We build these projects as if they were our own - with care, pride, and a real sense of responsibility”.
Likes: Spending time with whānau, being in the water, getting crays, watching rugby
Dislikes: That’s easy...sitting still!
“We’ve built a really solid team and I’m proud of where everyone’s at. What you put in is what you get out, we work hard, share a laugh and genuinely enjoy what we do. I think our clients feel that too and they enjoy being part of it. At the end of the day if you love the mahi, the quality will always show”
Bridgette
Ngāpuhi
As the other half of Hutch Construct, Bridgette works behind the scenes supporting all operational functions and also ensuring the mahi on site is shared authentically. With a background in brand and advertising in New Zealand and London, she brings a creative and strategic lens.
“Part of my role is telling the story - where it all began, either for us as a brand or the client. I’m still blown away by just how talented our team is. I’m constantly in awe of their ability to create something from scratch and of the skill, dedication and sheer hard work it takes. The other part of my role? Supporting Hutch. Because to tell a great story, we have to deliver. And to deliver, we need to ensure we stick to our processes and values - every time”
“Building something with heart and a creative eye grounded in traditional values is different. It’s the quiet drive to go the extra mile, even if no one notices. It’s driving efficiency to create value for our clients. It’s checking in, working alongside our client. It’s also about being real. No big egos and being honest - caring a little more than expected. For Hutch, it’s always been about delivering something special with a sense of duty and pride. Going that extra step - that’s what matters. That’s what sets us apart. For him, that’s the dream. That’s where the magic happens”
Bridgette also works in her whānau’s paint business, WPC. Both businesses are grounded in shared family values, service and a commitment to quality. And at the centre of it all? Their four tamariki, their team and their whānau. “That’s our why - building something that supports us all and producing mahi we’re proud of. Showing our kids what hard work, resilience and care really look like.”
Likes: Being in the water with the kids, a good work out and play list and talking smack with my friends over a marg/coffee!”
Dislikes: “I hate sitting still and not getting through my to-do list”
“Ultimately the end game is about delivering for the businesses and clients who trust us with their homes and projects. That’s a responsibility we never take lightly. Whether residential or commercial, we understand the privilege of being invited into something important and we approach every project with care, integrity and dedication”.
Meet the team.
We take great pride in our team, who consistently deliver the highest calibre of work for our clients. We believe that quality craftsmanship is only possible with a skilled and dedicated team.
Aimee
Ngāti Kahungunu
With nearly a decade of experience in relationship and Māori development, Aimee has built her career around supporting people and strengthening meaningful connections.
Aimee brings commercial awareness together with cultural insight to support business development at all levels and guides culturally responsive engagement at Hutch Construct. She plays a consultative role in strengthening client and partner relationships, identifying new growth opportunities - ensuring we deliver to our Kaupapa and that our development aligns with integrity, respect and long-term value. She is passionate about relationships - building trust, support and creating long-term connections that extend well beyond a single project.
A natural problem solver and a doer. Aimee brings a calm, solutions-focused mindset to challenges and enjoys finding practical, thoughtful ways forward. Her ability to balance commercial thinking with people-first values strengthens both our team culture and the way we work alongside clients.
Like her brothers, Aimee is highly creative and always has one project (or a few) on the go - from pottery to painting, to growing her incredible dahlias and everything in between. She has a strong eye for design and detail, and an ability to see both the bigger picture and the finer elements that bring a project to life.
For Aimee, construction isn’t just about buildings - it’s about people, relationships and doing the job properly.
“The best projects are grounded in partnership and shared values. When we lead with manaakitanga, whanaungatanga and genuine respect, we build more than structures - we build trust, opportunity and relationships that last well beyond the project itself.”
Likes: Being out in the garden, spending time with whanau, being creative
Dislikes: Sitting still!
Sam
Ngāti Kahungunu
Meet Sam (the other Hutch)
Growing up in Pōrangahau, Hawke’s Bay, Sam shares the same proud lineage of skilled craftsmen as his brother Hutch. Influenced by their father, a respected Ngāti Kere kaumātua and kaitiaki, and their grandfather, who built many local homes, Sam carries values of manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, hard work, and humility into everything he does.
A former detective in the New Zealand Police, Sam returned to building for the hands-on work, problem-solving, and satisfaction of seeing projects come to life. He brings strong skills, a gift for people, and a focus on relationships, teamwork, and delivering the best outcomes - never cutting corners and always looking ahead on the job.
“One of the best things about working at Hutch is the people. I get to work alongside my brother and a solid crew who have real fire in the belly to get things done and done well. There’s a lot of mutual respect and good banter to keep things always interesting. Teams everything really, when you're building with a good solid team, it doesn’t feel like work.”

Keena
One of Hutch Construct’s originals, Keena has been with the team from the very beginning. Almost fully qualified, he’s humble, steady, and lets his work speak for itself.
“I was always taught if you’re going to do something, do it properly. Don’t rush it, don’t cut corners. Just do it once and do it well.”
Born into a proud Tongan family, Keena carries values of respect, hard work, and humility into every job. Family is his driving force, and on site he’s known for his quiet focus, dedication, and love of seeing his mahi come to life. Ants
Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei
A proud Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei descendant, Ants first joined Hutch Construct through the iwi’s Hawaiki Development project, helping build homes by whānau, for whānau.
“Building on our whenua hit different. It’s special knowing what you’re creating will stay with our whānau and the next generation,”
Known for his care and attention to detail, Ants quickly became a valued member of the team and is now a full-time apprentice, learning every day and contributing to Hutch Construct’s culture of skill, mentorship, and whānau values. He aims to become fully qualified and inspire the next generation of Māori builders.
